Presumption : James 4:13-5:6

Presumption is living life and having wealth without God. So, how can a believer live without God? That’s just it; James refers to “people on the fringe.” James discusses two very important issues in this passage, life without God and wealth without God. Life without God is ignorant and arrogant. God is in the details, we just have to let Him have it. We must all remember, “If God wills we will live, and then do this or that – live in light of eternity. Submit to God, resist the devil.” We are not in control of our lives, and presumption is a very dangerous thing.

Hate Crimes of the Heart : James 4:11-12

This passage deals with an issue that has everything to do with someone’s heart – hatred. Often times people try to justify their hurtful words against others, but we cannot. It is not our place, our role, nor are we capable of judging others. We have overestimated ourselves and underestimated God! James shows us the symptom (slander), the problem (arrogance and pride), and the remedy (humility). Pastor John Meador also challenges us to not just avoid it – but STOP IT!

Anti-Dote to the Devil : James 4:7-10

This passage is the first time James brings up “the devil.” He has discussed his doorway in previous verses, but this time he lets us know how to resist him. One thing to remember – the devil does not come into our lives uninvited. There is a way to get rid of the devil’s influence: submit to God, resist the devil, draw near to God, cleanse your hands, purify your heart, mourn over sin, and humble your self. We must remember, “We will never have revival until every ounce of self-will is stamped out.”

Selfish Desire : James 4:1-6

Selfish Desires – a selfish heart that yearns for worldly desire will make the Christian life complicated! James 4:1-6 is about the “world in the church - the world in us!” Pastor John Meador helps his audience see the world exposed in us, expressed in us, explained in us, and finally, expelled in us. One symptom of the world in us is interpersonal conflict. The New Testament church was not always great – conflict existed. Worldliness is expressed in lust, envy, and a warped spiritual life. Many times we either do not ask God (because we want our own way) or we ask with wrong motives. It is all about a selfish heart. When we finally realize what God gives is so much better than anything else in the world – we come back – we humble ourselves, and the world is expelled. It is only by a humble heart that we win the battle against selfish desires.

Selfish Ambition : James 3:13-18

Wisdom is not just knowledge, but truth lived out. In this passage James addresses the issue of “selfish ambition.” Pastor John Meador walks through the problem, the reason, the source, and finally the solution to this issue. He answers the questions, where does evil come from in the church, how can people be so mean, and how can leaders be so self-centered and deceptive. Is it circumstances? No, the reason is the heart. Though Christians cannot be possessed, they can be influenced and deceived. Just remember, righteousness flourishes where peacemakers promote peace – and peace is an absence of self.

The Untamed Tongue : James 3:1-12

The tongue may be a very small part of our body, yet it is one of the most powerful parts. In the first sermon in his series “Piercing the Darkness” John Meador walks through James 3:1-12 to discuss the amazing power, astounding perversity, and the agonizing paradox of the untamed tongue. We must remember that with power comes incredible responsibility and accountability. The mouth of the follower of Christ should reflect Christ, not hell. So, how do we pierce the darkness? We must submit to God, resist the devil, and cleanse our hands and heart.

The Relevance of the Resurrection : 1 Corinthians 15:17-20

Easter is all about the resurrection – some may ask, so what? What difference does that make in my life? There are 100 references to the resurrection in the New Testament, and if Jesus did not rise, we’re wasting our time here! Doubts are simply an absence of evidence, so join Pastor John Meador as he walks through 1 Corinthians 15:17-20 and gives evidence for the relevance of the resurrection. Because Christ has risen, God’s purpose is still unchangeable for us, God’s power is still available in our lives, and His promises will still be accomplished. Without His resurrection, we have no proof that the One who suffered on Calvary was more than the feeble victim of an enormous wrong; powerless, as His enemies said, to save himself, and much more powerless to achieve the salvation of others! Celebrate the risen Savior today and the purposes He has in store for you.

Real Faith: Do you have IT? (Part 2) : James 2:19-26

This part of the Bible can be hard to understand – yet it is critically important. There are some keys that help us: remember what the Bible says about how salvation comes, stay on the main idea of the text – “faith without works is not real,” and understand the meaning of the word “justify.” Pastor John Meador walks through James 2:19-26 in his last sermon in the Church in the Mirror series and helps explain the issue of works and faith. Some see James and Paul as contradictory, but Meador helps you see that each man is writing to a different audience, Paul to the legalists and James to libertines, but both have the same message – salvation comes through grace. There are 2 main truths in this passage, real faith is verified when we trust God enough to obey Him and real faith is verified when we are more loyal to God than to our past. Therefore we must ask ourselves, what does the mirror (of the Word) say about our faith?

Real Faith: Do you have IT? (Part 1) : James 2:14-18

James brings us to the last test – the test of authentic faith. Did you know there is a counterfeit faith? A person can actually believe they have faith in Christ – and be badly mistaken. So how do we know? We must look in the mirror. Join Pastor John Meador as he walks through James 2:14-18 and discovers how faith is not real if there is no transformation, compassion, and demonstration. Just remember, it is impossible to demonstrate what you do not have! Can you demonstrate the reality of faith? If not, believe today.

How Does the Word See Us? : James 2:9-13

James takes the issue of judgmentalism serious because God does. Why? Because how we view a person is how we will treat them – and God calls us to “love them.” As Pastor John Meador walks through James 2:9-13 he asks three questions: what is “judgmentalism” and why is it so deceptive, what does the Word say will happen to the judgmental, and what should we do. The conclusion of this message points to this, “mercy triumphs over judgment.” How does your life demonstrate mercy? How does it reflect how God accepted you?

How Do We Look at Others? : James 2:1-9

James tests us. He pushes, pulls, and prods to make sure our faith is real. In a world filled with racism, partiality, stereotypes, and judgmentalism, Pastor John Meador walks us through James 2:1-9 and he challenges us to ask ourselves the question, “how do we look at others?” Are we partial, or impartial? He brings out the principle, the example, and the verdict. The final conclusion is this, if you love – you do well, and if you show partiality – you are committing sin. God loves us no matter what; our character should be more like His.

Eyes Wide Open: James 1:26-27

We need to open our eyes wider! Get involved! James opens this passage with a shocking statement, if your religion doesn’t change your words and your life, “it is worthless.” Now that he has our attention – what is real religion? Pastor John Meador helps us see the revealing test, a test of public compassion and of personal purity. He asks the question, “if hurting people move God’s heart, but not ours, how real is our religion?” We are to remain pure, spotless, and free from the life of sin. We are to be in the world, but not OF it. Meador asks his listeners to think of the world as an ocean of water – believers are in boats. The boat’s purpose is fulfilled when in water, but defeated when it is filled with water. Stay anchored to your new life, stay cleansed by your confession, and stay sensitive to your conscience.

Take Another Look: James 1:21-25

Do you want to be blessed? In James 1:21-25, James gets serious about becoming doers of the Word because information without action can result in deception. Pastor John Meador challenges his listeners to take another look at what needs to go, what needs to stay, and what needs to be done. Then he asks the question, how do we become doers? Based on James 1:25 he helps us discover the practice, the possession, and the promise. Allow God to examine your heart today and transform you into a doer of His Word.

Get Discernment: James 1:13-17

Most of us want to be delivered from temptation; we just want it to stay in touch with us! And it does – ever present. Have you ever noticed how temptation is stronger when we’re worn out? Storms in our lives can get us so tired and disoriented, we easily fall into temptation. In the last sermon of his series Peace in a Storm, Pastor John Meador leads his listeners through James 1:13-17 to discover the source of temptation, the strategy of temptation, and the result of temptation. Always remember sin will take you further than you want to go. It will keep you longer than you want to stay, and it will cost you more than you want to pay.

Get Ready: Peace in the Perfect Financial Storm: James 1:2-12
If we were to ask God for wisdom about finances during our economic downturn and search James 1 for the answers, what would we find? James challenges us to meet the future with a whole new perspective. John Meador opens James 1:2-12 to help us understand how to get ready to battle fear with faith, learn the "contentment" that is priceless, embark on a prayer adventure, and view our finances in a new way. Remember the battle is not about His ABILITY, but our TRUST.

Get Smart!: James 1:5-8

What do you do when you don't know what to do? John Meador opens James 1:5-8 to help us understand the promise from God, but also the warning. John helps us discover that God will give us wisdom generously and without reproach to all who ask in confidence. Yet, God also warns that we much ask without wavering. We cannot waver and expect anything from God, as well as, if we waver we become double-minded in all our ways. If you can anchor your trust in God's wisdom, you can weather the storms and come out on top!

Trusting When Nothing Makes Sense: Matthew 1:18-23

So many times we struggle to trust God because of our circumstances. However, God is always at work. John Meador demonstrates this utilizing Matthew 1:18-23. In this message, you will see the chaos in the mind of Mary, embarrassment in the mind of Joseph, ridicule from the mouths of people, and beauty in the hands of God. It is in the midst of our chaos that God brings power to do the impossible, brings us into His plan, brings the whole picture into play, and brings beauty out of chaos.
